Brother volunteers pack meals for Mandela Day initiative

Tswane, September 2015 – Brother International South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a leader in home and business IT peripherals, partnered with the Judea Hope organization to pack highly nutritious, dehydrated meals as the company’s team initiative for 67 Minutes for Mandela on 18 July. The team from Brother packed 1,996 food packets in a record-breaking 90 minutes resulting in 19,960 meals for distribution to feeding programmes and day care centres in the region.

Unique nutritional approach
Through research and consultation with local nutritional experts, Judea Hope has formulated a dehydrated rice, vegetable and legume based meal that provides all the macronutrient needs for a child and even an adult. To enhance the nutritional potency of the meal further a vitamin and mineral combination was specifically formulated for the meal pack and is included in the packing.

Through a fun and engaging assembly line process, the volunteers from Brother assembled and packed the food packets comprising rice, soy, vegetables, flavouring and vitamins. Each food packet reconstitutes to provide a nutritious meal sufficient for ten children. The meals are easy to transport, store and distribute to those in greatest need.

The packed meals were distributed by Brother in Soshanguve in August at a community event facilitated by TBL Empowerment Solutions and Judea Hope.

As part of the event, the team hosted a temporary day care centre for the local children and took part in games and creative activities for the morning. “ There are currently no day care facilities in the area for small children who are not yet ready for school. Parents have nowhere to safely leave their children during the day while they are at work so these types of facilities serve a valuable purpose for the local community,” said Tracey Grobbelaar, CSR manager at Brother South Africa.
